Freediving in Amed, Bali: A Beginner’s Guide

Freediver surrounded by a school of fish in Bali

Freediving is diving on a single breath — no tanks, no bubbles, just you and the ocean. It is quiet, graceful and surprisingly accessible. With calm bays, clear water and deep blue just a few fin kicks from the beach, Amed is one of the best places in Bali to try freediving.

Why freedive in Amed?

  • Calm conditions on most mornings in Jemeluk Bay and Lipah Bay.
  • Depth close to shore: the reef slopes into deeper water a short swim from the beach.
  • Warm water — usually 26–29 °C — so you can relax and stay comfortable.
  • Beautiful targets: coral gardens, turtles, and the shallow Japanese Wreck, which lies in just a few metres of water.
  • Views of Mount Agung rising above the bay while you breathe up on the surface.

Is freediving for me?

If you are comfortable in the water and can swim, you can learn to freedive. Freediving is less about holding your breath for a long time and more about relaxation, good technique and safety. Many people are surprised how much further and deeper they can go after just one or two days of training.

Freediving courses in Amed

Discovery Freediving — your first breath-hold adventure. Learn breathing, relaxation and equalisation, then explore the reef with your instructor. Half-day and full-day options, no experience needed.

Wave 1 — Beginner — a 2–2.5 day course where you master the fundamentals: breathing and relaxation techniques, equalisation, safe diving practices and your first structured depth dives.

Wave 2 — Advanced — for certified freedivers who want to go deeper with better equalisation, efficiency and control.

Freediving safety: the golden rules

  • Never freedive alone. Always dive with a trained buddy who watches you from the surface.
  • Do not hyperventilate before a dive.
  • Equalise early and often — never force it.
  • Learn rescue skills in a proper course before training on your own.
  • Rest well between dives and listen to your body.

Freediving and scuba in one trip

Amed is perfect for mixing both: scuba dive the USAT Liberty wreck in the morning and freedive the coral garden in the afternoon. Remember that freediving after scuba diving on the same day needs care — your instructor will plan it safely.
