Learn to Dive in Bali: Your PADI Open Water Course in Amed

School of reef fish in clear blue water — what you can see on your first dives in Amed

Bali is one of the best places in the world to learn to dive — and Amed, on the island’s quiet north-east coast, is one of the best places in Bali to do it. Warm water, calm bays and reefs that start right from the beach make the first steps easy and relaxed.

Why learn to dive in Amed?

  • Calm, shallow bays like Jemeluk Bay — perfect for your first open water dives.
  • Warm water (usually 26–29 °C) and good visibility most of the year.
  • Shore entries: no long boat rides or seasickness.
  • Amazing marine life from day one: turtles, clownfish, rays and colourful corals.
  • Bali’s most famous wreck, the USAT Liberty, is just up the coast.

Not sure yet? Try Discover Scuba Diving

If you just want to try, start with a PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience. In a few hours you learn the basics with an instructor and make a shallow dive on the reef — no certification needed. Children from 8 can try PADI Bubblemaker in very shallow water.

The PADI Open Water Diver course step by step

The Open Water Diver course is the world’s most popular dive certification. When you finish, you are certified for life to dive to 18 metres with a buddy, anywhere in the world.

  1. Knowledge development — the theory of diving, online in advance or with your instructor.
  2. Confined water — you practise the key skills in the pool until you feel comfortable.
  3. Four open water dives — you repeat the skills in the ocean and start exploring Amed’s reefs.

The course usually takes about 3 days. Short on time? The PADI Scuba Diver course is the first half of Open Water and lets you dive to 12 m with a professional — you can finish the rest later.

Requirements

  • Minimum age: 10 years.
  • Able to swim and medically fit to dive (you fill in a short medical questionnaire).
  • No previous diving experience needed.

After your Open Water: what’s next?

Many of our students continue with the Advanced Open Water course (5 adventure dives, certified to 30 m), then Rescue Diver and even Divemaster. If you love being underwater without a tank, try a freediving course.

Tips for your first dive course

  • Don’t plan a flight for at least 18–24 hours after your last dive.
  • Get a good night’s sleep and stay hydrated.
  • Tell your instructor if you feel nervous — small groups mean plenty of personal attention.
